Brief History of Orange, CA
The city of Orange was founded sometime before 1870 by two Los Angeles lawyers, Alfred Beck Chapman & Andrew Glassell. They owned about 5400 acres in what is now downtown Orange. Alfred Beck Chapman first named Orange, Richland. Richland at the time needed a post office, so an application for a post office was initiated, but it was refused because Sacramento City already had a Richland. It was then that the name Richland had to be changed. A game of poker was played between Chapman, Glassell and two other men, whoever won the game got to re-name the town. No one knows who one the game but some one re-named Richland to Orange in 1875.
In the 1880’s the boom times arrived. The people of Orange wanted to attract tourist, so flyers where passed out all over the country and new buildings where built to accommodate them. The boom years where over and farmers started growing orange trees. Oranges were the cities main crop a while after that when the trees were matured. The city of Orange strives for a balance of attractive neighborhoods and a strong business base.
The main point of interest in Orange is the Block at Orange. It is an outdoor mall with a variety of restaurants, clothing stores, entertainment areas, an AMC movie theater and special events scheduled year round. Another point of interest is The Village of Orange which features over 100 specialty shops and restaurants among other services. A great place to visit is the Orange County Zoo, a family fun place.
