Brief History of Westminster
The city of Westminster was founded in 1870 and was the second colony in Orange County to be deliberately founded. Westminster was named after the Westminster assembly of 1643. In 1872 the town’s first school house was built. Westminster Boulevard was known as Almond Avenue in 1874 and it was home to the towns first "general store". In the 1900's Westminster continued to gain the reputation as the finest darying center in the country. The Green Kat Tavern was built in 1927 and is now a landmark. During the 1990's the Warne family ranch at Bolsa & Bushard became part of "Little Saigon" area in Westminster. Westminster was named " All American City" in 1996 by the National Civic League for civic accomplishments .
The city of Westminster has many fun filled activities and recreational centers for the whole family. The Westminster Mall located on Bolsa Avenue has many great stores and restaurants. Some great restaurants include Outback Steakhouse, "S" Vietnams Fine Dining. The world famous "Little Saigon" covers approximately four blocks on Bolsa Avenue, with many authentic Vietnamese restaurants and jewelry centers. It is a cultural and commercial capital for nearly 300,000 Vietnamese Americans and is the largest concentration of Vietnamese people outside of Vietnam. . The Liberty Skate Park was designed for beginner and intermediate skaters and is a recreational place for some of the youth in Westminster.
Some points of interest include: The Westminster Ice Arena being a great recreational and event center. The arena holds Hockey clinics to teach people the sport of hockey it also has a skating school and a party and event center. Another point of interest is the Vietnam War Memorial Park. It was initiated by Westminster City Councilman Frank G. Fry in 1997. Westminster also has a marvelous award winning rose garden located on Westminster Boulevard.
