Brief history of Orange County
The history of Orange County began with the Shoshone Indians. By the mid 1700s, Spain (through Mexico) claimed the Southern California area and began to establish churches and olonies. In 1769 the Europeans began to colonize the Orange County area, and named it "The Valley of Saint Anne"
(Santa Ana).
Following Mexico's liberation from Spain in 1821, the Orange County land holdings were subdivided and awarded to a number of distinguished war heroes. For the next 50 years, Orange County was dominated by cattle ranches, supplying the New England states with tallow and hides. A severe drought ended the ranching period. . The wilderness had finally given way to irrigated farmlands and prosperous communities. A year-round harvest of Valencia oranges, lemons, avocados, and walnuts and flowers made agriculture the most important industry in Orange County. The county formally separated from Los Angeles County in 1889 and was named Orange County in honor of its most popular crop.
During the years that followed, Orange County witnessed the discovery of oil in Huntington Beach, the birth of the aerospace industry on the Irvine Ranch, and filming of several Hollywood classics in the Newport area.
Today Orange County is comprises 24 incorporated cities and a population of 3.1 million. It is the second most populous county in California and the 5 th in the nation, despite being the smallest California county in size at 948 square miles.
